Pergola Height Rules.

Pergola height rules in the UK are set by Permitted Development. The headline numbers: 2.5m max if within 2m of a boundary, 3m for a flat-roof pergola further into the garden, and 4m for a dual-pitched roof. This guide covers the detail and the exceptions.

Within 2m of a boundary

If any part of the pergola is within 2m of a fence or boundary wall, the maximum allowed height under Permitted Development is 2.5m. This is measured from the natural ground level to the highest point of the structure.

Further into the garden

If the pergola is more than 2m from any boundary, you can go up to 3m for a flat or single-pitch roof, or 4m for a dual-pitched roof. The eaves height should not exceed 2.5m in either case.

Attached to the house

When the pergola is attached to the rear of the house, it is treated as an extension. Maximum eaves height is 3m (within 2m of a boundary), and total height should not exceed the existing roofline. Larger projects may need a planning application or Prior Approval.

Common questions

Quick answers to the questions UK homeowners ask most. Can't see yours? Ask in the quote form and an installer will come back to you.

How tall can a pergola be without planning permission?
Under Permitted Development in England, a pergola can be up to 2.5m high if within 2m of any boundary, or up to 3m (4m for a dual-pitched roof) elsewhere in the garden, providing it sits behind the principal elevation of the house.
Do I need planning permission for a pergola attached to my house?
A pergola attached to the house is treated as an extension under Permitted Development. It must not extend beyond the rear wall by more than 3m (detached houses) or 4m, must not exceed 4m in height, and the eaves must not exceed 3m if within 2m of a boundary. Check with your local planning authority for your specific case.
Are there different rules in conservation areas?
Yes. Permitted Development rights are often restricted in conservation areas, National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Sites. You may need full planning permission even for a modest pergola. Always check with your council before proceeding.
